Buxton is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The Buxton area was settled by Henry T. Buxton in 1884, and the town was named for his family, including his father, also named Henry Buxton, a pioneer of 1841. A post office was established on December 27, 1886, with Henry T Buxton as the first postmaster. A new school building was completed about 1938. In 1954, the community joined with neighboring Manning and Banks to form the Tri-City Rural Fire Protection District (now Banks Fire District) The post office continued until at least 1976 and had a zip code of 97109. The community experiences warm, dry summers, with the average monthly temperature being 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Buxton has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. It is located near Oregon Route 47, near Apple Valley Airport and the BanksVernonia State Trail. It was also the name of a station on the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad above Mendenhall Creek east of the community. In 1998, the Buxton School, part of the Banks School District, closed in 1998 with the building sold in 2000 to the Banks Christian Academy. In June 2015, the school was taken over by Faith Bible Christian School, which closed the school in June 2015. It has a trailhead at L. L. "Stub" Stewart Memorial State Park.

History

Buxton is the primary city name, but also Banks are acceptable city names or spellings. The Buxton area was settled by Henry T. Buxton in 1884. The town was named for his family, including his father, also named Henry Buxton, a pioneer of 1841. A post office was established on December 27, 1886. A new school building was completed about 1938. The Buxton School, part of the Banks School District, closed in 1998 with the building sold in 2000. Banks Christian Academy closed the Buxton school in June 2015, with the school then being taken over by Faith Bible Christian School. In 1954, the community joined with neighboring Manning and Banks to form the Tri-City Rural Fire Protection District (now Banks Fire District) The post office continued until at least 1976 and had a zip code of 97109. The community was also the name of a station on the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad above Mendenhall Creek east of the community. It has a population of about 2,000. It is located on U.S. Route 20, just south of the Oregon-California border. It was once known as the "Buxton Junction" and was located on the Oregon Turnpike, just west of the town of Banks. It also had a post office until 1976 and was known as "The Village of Buxton" until the end of the 20th century, when it was replaced by the "Banks Post Office" The community is now part of Banks Christian School, which was founded in 1998. The school was closed in 2015 and the building was sold in 2016.

It has a hot, dry summer, with average monthly highs of 73.0 °C and an average monthly low of 72.6  °F and an average annual high of 73.0 °C. It is the only place in the Dales to have a hot dry winter. It also has a cold, dry spring and summer, with an average temperature of 74.7  °C and a monthly high of 74.8 °C, the average summer high of 74 °E. It has a warm summer Mediterranean climate. It experiences dry summers and dry winters.

Transportation

Apple Valley Airport, Buxton Trailhead of the Banks, Vernonia State Trail, and Buxton State Trail are among the trails in the area. Apple Valley is home to the U.S. Air Force base at Apple Valley Airport. The airport is located in the town of Apple Valley, New York, and is located on the banks of the Ohio River. The town also has its own state park, the Apple Valley State Park, which is located near the airport. The U.N.
